This paper discusses monitoring of tool wear in milling process. Flank wear on end cutting edge is monitored with the change of cutter height, which can be measured by laser scan micrometer during air cutting. The presented approach requires only tool geometry before operations. Therefore it can be performed easily for machining several products without experiments. This approach, however, has time loss for monitoring operations. Self-adaptive monitoring is presented to optimize monitoring intervals. It predicts wear process with monitoring; and determines monitoring intervals sequentially with estimating the prediction performance and time loss for monitoring. It is proved that monitoring system can adapt itself to the prediction performance and requirements for the operation.
