This paper discusses a methodology for improving stamping process design. The approach utilizes finite element analysis to model the stamping process for a given set of process parameters such as blank holder force, coefficient of friction, etc. Experimental design and statistical methods are used to investigate different process parameter combinations and their effect on springback. Based on these results we use non-linear regression to determine functional relationships between the process parameters and the springback in the material. These functional relationships can then be used to minimize the springback in the stamped part. The approach brings together concepts from engineering, statistics and mathematical optimization in a unique and innovative way, and has the potential to significantly improve quality, performance and costs associated with stamping processes.
