Sulzer Hexis has been operating a total of six field test systems since 1998 in Europe and Japan. After initial operating problems, primarily with the peripheral equipment, today's systems operate reliably. The average operating time of 2000 h/stack was able to be increased to > 6000 h/stack in the year 2001. The chief problems today are the gradual loss of power from the cell stack (ca. 3% rel. / 1000 h), the risk of cell fracture on cooling down and starting up, and the production cost of the devices, which is still too high. On the foundation of the know-how gained to date with over 85'000 operating hours (extrapolated to May 2001), the planned delivery of pilot production fuel cell heating systems Type HXS 1000 PREMIERE will begin in the autumn of 2001. Sulzer Hexis, with its extensive operating experience and the start of series production of key components, is on the right path in the development of fuel cell heating systems with market maturity.
