EXERGY EVALUATION OF THE MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE INCINERATOR SYSTEMS USING NATURAL GAS

Recently, there have been rising concerns over the environment and energy problems in Japan. The heat energy of municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration has been considered to be a useful source of energy. Highly efficient waste-to-energy systems (WTE systems) that can obtain a power generation output higher than that of conventional WTE systems from the same MSW incineration heat have been put into practical use in recent years. To promote such WTE systems, it is important to clarify the characteristics. In this paper, the exergy balance of each of the highly efficient WTE systems: the high-temperature and high-pressure boiler WTE system, the combined-cycle WTE system and the waste-pyrolysis-gasification-melting WTE system, have been evaluated to clarify the characteristics of each system. Additionally, we defined the average equivalent MSW power generation efficiency to consider the changes in calorific value of the MSW in the comparison of WTE systems. Comparing the efficiency of each system, we obtained the guidelines for selection of an optimal system.
