The multitronic~R continuously variable automatic transmission has been in production since October 1999 and is available to customers in Europe in the 2.8 L Audi A6 engine which generates 142 kW/193 hp and 280 Nm of torque. In view of the positive results of a previously carried out pre-development project, production development of the transmission was started in 1994. The major development targets were: 1. Acceleration 10% better than stepped automatic and at least equal to manual gearbox 2. Consumption benefit of 10% compared with stepped automatic 3. Shift dynamics as for stepped automatic 4. A torque capacity of 280 Nm with potential for 310 Nm The joint development program between Audi and LuK has significantly raised the previously existing power transfer limits of continuously variable belt-drive transmissions. This is once more impressively confirmed by the use in diesel vehicles of the Audi A4 and A6 series. This is the first time a CVT has being fitted in a diesel vehicle having more than 300 Nm engine torque. The performance capacity of the transmission has been still further improved in conjunction with the production start in the new Audi A4 with 3.0 L petrol engine and 162kW/220 HP. LuK is responsible for the development and manufacture of key components of this transmission.
