Over the past 10 to 15 years, granular sludge technologies are being more commonly used forrntreating high strength wastewaters with low suspended solids (SS) concentration due to theirrninherent advantages. The Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) and the EnhancedrnGranular Sludge Bed (EGSB) are two of the most commonly used granular technologies forrntreating such wastewaters. Several factors, such as wastewater characteristics, pH, temperature,rnreactor configuration, nutrients, recycle and other design elements affect performance ofrnUASB/EGSB reactors.rnThis paper highlights the findings from a general survey of granular anaerobic treatment systemsrnand Triad’s experience at two systems in particular in which UASB/EGSB performance wasrnenhanced. Common problems encountered and ways to alleviate or reduce these problems tornoptimize the system are summarized. Optimization methods discussed include: chemical feedrnlocations, recycle, reactor pH, control of oil & grease, and reactor feed distribution.
