摘要

We have compared different performance measures of the two standardized WLANs, IEEE 802.11 and ETSI Hiperlan Type 1. Two essential performance-limitation factors have been considered: "hidden terminal" effect and number of stations in the network. "Hidden terminals" have overall negative influence of the performance of both WLANs, reducing throughput and increasing both delays and discard probabilities. However, compared to the Hiperlan 1, IEEE 802.11 WLAN is more sensitive to "hidden terminal" presence, due to simplicity of its MAC protocol. The sophisticated but complex EY-NPMA MAC of the Hiperlan 1 makes most of its performance measures insensitive to the number of stations, not being the case with the IEEE 802.11.
