An experimental investigation of the cyclic behavior of gusset plate connections was conducted to assess the effect of free edge stiffeners and gusset plate - brace member interaction on the strength and behavior of corner gusset plates. Four tests on full-scale corner gusset plate connections were conducted. The tests indicated that stiffeners improve significantly the energy absorption capacity of gusset plate assemblies when the gusset plates are designed to buckle before the brace members. Current simplified methods to calculate the tension and compression capacity of the corner gusset plates are conservative.
