Explosives solutions for projects in jeopardy

Innovative explosives applications solved problems that had jeopardized the outcomes of three separate projects. On each of the projects the non-explosives methodology previously in use could not accomplish the task at hand. The projects were diverse: water well decommissioning, underwater bridge-pier demolition and landslide mitigation. The problems were also varied, resulting from site-specific materials anomalies, unworkable contract specifications and geologic instability. Unfortunately, on each project, explosives use initially had not been considered an option. Other methods had been selected through lack of knowledge about the many uses for explosives or through decisions based not upon science but for well-intentioned, albeit misguided, political reasons. In each case, when finally allowed, unique blasting approaches provided a solution.
