Using a Cohesive Discrete Element Method (CDEM), three-dimensional simulations have been performed to investigate the failure of fine, cohesive granular materials. Inter-particle cohesion is taken into account by modeling liquid bridges in pendular state. With respect to liquid bridges, a minimum separation distance of particles considers the influence of surface roughness. Spherical and non-spherical particles were used for direct shear and tensile test simulations. A good agreement with experimental results was found. Applying negative loads, the curvature of the yield loci in the tensile range could be revealed successfully.
