摘要

An ultra precision machine tool has been developed to perform multi-functions of grinding, cutting, lapping or polishing. The key components designed for the ductile-mode machining include the hybrid type PZT or giant magnetostrictive actuators for fine positioning, the parallel-plate type force transducer for sub-mN sensing and a high-pressure coolant pump for coolant supplying. Based on the results obtained from the grinding and scratching tests of six types of optical glasses, the machining parameters governing the brittle-to-ductile transition have been evaluated. The results also lead to an important finding that the critical depth of cut in grinding can be generalized to approximately six folds of the critical depth in indentation or seven folds in scratching.
