The purpose of this study was to explore the differences among multi-sensory (visual - acoustic, visual - tactile, and visual - vibration) and visual-only perception for interaction design of handheld devices under different environmental conditions. Kansei engineering approach and multivariate analysis were employed for establishing the relationships between the perceived Kansei image and the corresponding design parameters. The results of the study showed that there were significant differences on emotion evaluations for interaction design between multi-sensory and visual-only perception. Among them, the emotion evaluation of visual - vibration sensory had higher scores in general, while that of visual-only perception receiving the least. In addition, the respondents preferred an environment without background sound over that with sound.
