The understanding of metal deformation behaviour has been significantly improved by the utilisation of process models, typically based on numerical techniques such as the finite element method, for forging, rolling and sheet metal forming. The application of these models also reveals the generally poor nature of process control in the metal working industries and has, therefore, given rise to improvements in plant and the use of data logging for quality control purposes. The current capability of computer models to predict process conditions for metal forming operations is examined together with the requirements for the quality of the input data needed and the implications that this has for the material supply industry.
