This paper presents, a two stage krill herd algorithm (TKHA) to address optimum power flow (OPF) issue in complex power system. Proposed algorithm implemented with two stage initialization approach provide optimal solution of the objective functions individually with less number of iterations which minimize the overall convergence time. The validity of TKHA is tested for a standard test function and IEEE 30-bus system. Optimum power flow problem is solved for the test system using proposed TKHA considering minimization of total cost of generation which include both active and reactive power costs as objective function. Results derived using proposed algorithm is compared with existing algorithm which unveils potentiality and suitability of the new approach.
