The objective of rapid computer-aided model development aims at simplifying the modeling process by directing the modeling effort towards the fundamental principles rather than tedious equation editing. Computer-aided generation and analysis of models for dynamic systems constitutes a tremendous challenge for systems research. Thus there is a need for a declarative modeling language to support model construction and novel analysis technique to check the consistency of the mathematical artifacts generated. TechTool is a phenomenological simulation environment for the rapid generation of large-scale process models currently under development in the Laboratory for Product and Process Design. Among the ample features of TechTool, this paper only describes the declarative modeling language and its unique inheritance mechanism specifically designed for the formulation of chemical process models. An overview of advanced symbolic features for the analysis of the generated models for the correct numerical treatment of system equations is presented. A case study illustrates structural analysis capabilities by means of the index analysis of a differential algebraic system.
