Large, high speed, and/or high tonnage paper machines often require considerable fourdinier drive power. This drive power is defined in the TAPPI Technical Information Sheet, "Power Requirements of Fourdrinier Machines." The large machines often require more than one indrive to provide this power to the fourdrinier section. It is the purpose of this paper to provide a method for calculating the maximum power a roll is capable of transmitting without slipping and thus determine the maximum size drive which may be applied. The calculations are also valuable in determining the proper load division between the several drives on a fourdrinier. Fundamental calculation methods and data are presented which may be applied to various fourdrinier arrangements.
