The world's largest adjustable speed drive system is now operational at NASA's National Transonic Facility in Hampton, Virginia. The drive system consists of a twelve pulse Load Commutated Inverter (LCI) driving a 135,000 horsepower synchronous motor. Partial discharge couplers were installed on the motor windings and on the output bridges of the LCI to monitor motor insulation performance. Initial calibration of the equipment was made, and a baseline reading was taken in the wind tunnel air mode at 360 rpm, 30 megawatts. Partial discharge readings have been taken in 1997 and 1998. Data is presented showing the LCI and motor discharges.
