Creative Interdisciplinary Team's Effort Results in Economic Development of a Previously Sub-Economic Field, South Zelda Field,Offshore Southeast Sumatra

YPF/Maxus’ South Zelda field, offshore southeast Sumatra,rnIndonesia, was successfully developed in late 1998 with therninstallation of a braced caisson, the drilling of six developmentrnwells, and the successful tie-back and completion of thernoriginal discovery and delineation wells in the Zeldarnsandstones (Oligocene). At the platform’s October 1998rnstartup (prior to the development drilling and excluding therntwo non-platform wells), the field began producing at a rate ofrn2,500 BOPD from two wells and subsequent to therndevelopment drilling and completion of the remaining sixrnplatform wells in March 1999, the field’s anticipatedrnproduction rate is over 8,000 BOPD. What made this projectrnunique was the creative combination of engineering andrnscience that converted a ten-year old sub-commercialrndiscovery into an economic development despite the lowest oilrnprices since the field's discovery and without governmentrnincentives.
