Coherent multi-rate wideband DS-CDMA (W-CDMA) system has been developed in our company. It is characterized by asynchronous cell site operation with fast cell search algorithm, pilot symbol-assisted coherent reverse/forward links, and forward links that use tree-structured orthogonal multi-spreading factor (SF) codes. Interference canceler and adaptive antenna array diversity are designed to further enhance the transmission quality and increase the link capacity. In this paper, overview of the coherent multicode W-CDMA techniques are introduced and details on error correction technique and adaptive transmit power control (ATPC) are described. Experiments on W-CDMA are also presented. The W-CDMA radio access with the evolved GSM core network are the best solution for the 3rd generation mobile communication systems. The W-CDMA radio compared to 2nd generation radio (GSM, PDC, IS-95) has higher capacity, wider coverage, and more efficient of frequency utilization.
