Color spaces and color difference formulas are based on one of two fundamental ideas:rn1. color space is an accumulation of all possible threshold differencesrn2. global color space can be divided into ever smaller increments down to threshold differencesrnAn implementation of the first idea is based on the MacAdam threshold ellipses and represented by the FMC formulas. Implementations of the second are often based on the Munsell system and a typical example is the CIELAB space and formula. This discrepancy in interpretation has not been resolved yet even though in the practical world of color control it is the second idea that has been triumphant in recent years.
