It has been known for some time that ultrasound enhances the application of dyes to fabrics.' It was shown by North Carolina State University, College of Textiles that the color shade of vat dyes could be increased (darkened) by passing the fabric between two ultrasound transducers. The ultrasound was applied during the pigment application, the first step in vat dyeing. The transducers were positioned within close proximity to the fabric and driven by high power generators. Increases of over 100% in color shade were observed in these initial trials.2 Unlike previous dyeings using horns, this new method produced very level dyeings.
