VHF COMMUNICATIONS 8.33kHz PROGRAM

The implementation of 8.33 kHz channel spacing in Europe has resulted in full-scale development and production programs at all of the major avionics vendors. Even though the deadline for implementation has been extended nine months, from 1 January 1999 to 7 October 1999, there are still many challenges to be faced before the industry can say there has been a successful implementation of this program. This paper describes the development program planning, requirements issues, production start-up , field implementation, and operational issues for the 8.33 kHz program at Rockwell Collins. The development and production start-up program is provided as a backdrop for discussions concerning some of the current issues effecting 8.33 kHz channel spacing implementation.
