Giardia and Cryptosporidium are two pathogenic protozoans which can bernfound in drinking water and can pose a significant threat to public health. Tornascertain the level of inactivation provided by a water treatment disinfectionrnscheme, bench-scale disinfection studies on the target organisms are performed.rnThis study examines the inactivation in post- filtration source water with seasonalrnvariations from large metropolitan facility employing a chlorine-chloraminerndisinfection scheme.rnUsing the volumetric excystation procedure, inactivation for Giardia canrnbe documented at the 2 log level. The volumetric procedure is also applied tornCryptosporidium and inactivation is documented at the 0.20 log level. The data isrnfound to be consistent and reproducible, and therefore reliable as a benchmark ofrnthe current levels of inactivation and the procedures developed and adapted in thernstudy can be used with confidence in future studies.
