Application of Processing Maps in the Quality Assessment of Engineering Components- An Indian Experience

Processing maps have been generated on a variety of materials for the optimization of hot workability and control of microstructure. In all these attempts, the aim is to determine the workability of the material and to understand its behavior over a wide range of temperatures and strain rates to obtain quality end products. In this paper a problem related to AFNOR 7020 high strength Aluminium alloy during fabrication and storage is presented which called for the detailed understanding of the material causing the reasons for such problems. Processing maps for this material were established with microstructural correlation for different domains. The microstructures were found on the finished products like forgings, rolled rings and the details obtained through processing maps were compared with that of the finished product and the material behavior was predicted. These are now being used as regular quality control checks. Thus in this paper the use of processing maps and the microstructure for quality assessment is elucidated with specific example of high strength Aluminium alloys for launch vehicle applications.
