Fly Ash Radioactivity - A Barrier for Utilization?

Radionuclides content of fly ash varies with nature of coals. For example in Romania we have a lignite with 200 Bq/Kg and hard coal with 115 Bq/Kg of Ra_(226) (Table 1).rnBuilding materials with 50-75% fly ash are the same radon exhalation and inhalation dose like traditional materials. Fly ash radioactivity isn't a barrier for using in building materials but is necessary a sanitary check and certifying usual now in Romania.rnIt is necessary adoption of a national settlement for radioactivity of building materials and for radon exhalation in houses and to harmonise them with the international legislation.
