Large volume management of CCBs (coal combustion by-products) in underground mines to control subsidence and acid mine drainage has significant possibilities, particularly in Illinois where high sulfur coals at shallow mining depths are exploited and protection of prime agricultural lands and groundwater resources is crucial. A cooperative research agreement between the U.S. Department of Energy and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale was initiated in 1993 to develop blind backfilling technologies to manage CCBs and FGD (flue gas desulfurization) by-products in underground mines to control surface subsidence.
