Electrical power is transmitted across the country via aboveground transmission lines, which, in many cases, are supported by large, high towers. Many of these towers are tstabilized by guy wires that are anchored in the ground to prevent strong winds from knocking down the towers. These anchor rods can range from 1 to 2-1/s inches in diameter and 8 to 22 feet long. Most of them are underground and subject to corrosion. If a certain amount of corrosion occurs, the anchor rods can no longer support the towers, and they can be blown over by strong winds.
