Reconciling scene realism with interactivity has emerged asrnone of the most important areas in making virtual reality fea-rnsible for large-scale mechanical CAD datasets consisting of sev-rneral millions of primitives. This paper surveys our research andrnrelated work for achieving interactivity without sacrifcing real-rnism in virtual reality walkthroughs and rythroughs of polygonalrnCAD datasets. We outline our recent work on eu000ecient genera-rntion of triangle strips from polygonal models that takes advan-rntage of compression of connectivity information. This resultsrnin substantial savings in rendering, transmission, and storage.rnWe outline our work on genus-reducing simplifcations as wellrnas real-time view-dependent simplifcations that allow on-the-ryrnselection amongst multiple levels of detail, based upon lightingrnand viewing parameters. Our method allows multiple levels ofrndetail to coexist on the same object at diu000berent regions and tornmerge seamlessly without any cracks or shading artifacts. Wernalso present an overview of our work on hardware-assisted image-rnbased rendering that allows interactive exploration of computer-rngenerated scenes.
