This paper proposes a new mobile multi-media terminal architecture for PHS to permit the use of portable computer devices. The features of the architecture are as follows. First, the communication control function is put into the terminals to make it possible to correct transmission error adaptively according to the data type. Second, high levels of modularity are offered as is a clean interface to the computing equipment. Experiments are conducted using a test bed which can simulate PHS communication control functions. The throughput of 23kbits/s is obtained with non-PDU data transfer with TT-ARQ at CNR values above 30dB. The throughput of 13.9kbits/s can be obtained by FTP with TT-ARQ at CNR values above 30dB.
