It is well known that wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) can be used for optical cross-connects [1][2]. To construct a large scale optical cross-connect with WDM, we have to consider reusing a limited number of wavelengths in some ways. Recently, space switch arrays based on semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) have experienced a great deal of progress [3]. The SOA-based space switch can provide the optical wavelength transparency which makes it possible to interconnect WDM-based cross-connects. To construct a large scale optical cross-connect with wavelength reuse, we propose an optical cross-connect architecture by combining WDM and space division multiplexing.
