The authors describe a channel assignment scheme for cellularnmobile telephone systems in which assignment is based on actual fieldnstrength measurements performed dynamically on the functioning system.nThe scheme involves no rigid partitioning of the channel set intongeographic patterns, as in conventional systems. A mutual interferencencriterion is applied to ensure that satisfactory service is maintainednthroughout the system. The system provides capacity improvements rangingnfrom 100% to 300% depending on the complexity of the implementation. Itnis implementable using any of the current or proposed modulation schemes
