The network requirements for back-up protection and thenopportunities created by advances in communication, information andncomputer networking technologies are discussed in this paper. Ansophisticated protection and control algorithm is proposed that usesninformation from multiple monitoring points to take a broad view of theneffect of faults and other disturbances on a transmission network. Thenalgorithm is evaluated using a simulator that models the effect ofnfaults on the South Western part of the UK National Grid network
