The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (Metropolitan) is one of the world's largest water agencies. Acting as a water wholesaler, Metropolitan supplies half of the more than three million acre-feet a year used by nearly 14 million people within its 5200-square-mile service area. Presently, Metropolitan operates five treatment plants, with a combined design capacity of 1.8 billion gallons per day (bgd). By 1995, Metropolitan's treatment platn capacity is expected to reach 2.9 bgd.
