Key elements to the successful integration of electric drive technologies into the market place are anrninformed customer base, the availability of incentives to “buy down” the initial high costs associatedrnwith new technology, and policies that support use of the technology. Advocacy efforts in the U.S. atrnthe local, state and federal levels have created an environment that is supporting widespread acceptancernof available electric drive products and is paving the way for a smooth market entry of new technologiesrnlike fuel cell electric vehicles and new hybrid electric product offerings. Leading advocacy efforts forrntwelve years, EVAA has developed institutional knowledge about what works – and what doesn’t workrn– in building a policy, education and infrastructure framework to support introduction of electric driverntechnologies and the subsequent development of a sustainable market for these environmentallyrnimportant products. This paper will provide a status of the current EV policy, infrastructure and publicrnawareness framework in the U.S. and will discuss how this environment was created; what is left to berndone; and how industry will organize to continue to expand and develop the U.S. market for electricrndrive systems.
