Excessive flow-induced vibration causing fretting-wear damage can seriously affect the performance of power and process plant components. Fretting-wear damage usually takes place between a vibrating component and its supports. Typical components of concern are piping systems and pipe-supports, multispan heat exchanger tubes and tube-supports, and nuclear fuel bundles and fuel channels. This paper outlines a simple energy approach to assess fretting-wear damage.
