摘要

This paper presents a numerical means of quantifying the energy absorption characteristics of entities which are in an impact. A focus on automotive components is considered but the method presented in this paper can be employed for other applications. The ability for structures to absorb energy, which is generally due to the plastic deformation caused by collisions, is of significant importance to occupants of vehicles. High energy storing structures help ensure that there is less energy available to cause bodily harm or death to drivers or passengers. Many different methods of quantifying the efficiency of impact-energy-absorbing devices have been developed, however, these methods generally consider geometric and material characteristics but fail to address the severity of the collision. The Energy Absorption Factor (E.A.F.) presents a method for considering geometrical and material qualities while also considering the magnitude of impact. Furthermore, the E.A.F. is an easy way to present information on energy absorbing capacities.
