Ergonomics Intervention Decreased the Health Impairment, Saving Energy and Increased the Productivity of the Students at Woodworking Workshop Civil Engineering Department Bali State Polytechnic Indonesia
Woodworking workshop is dangerous, particularly when it is used improperly. Students exposed to the following common health hazards: overexertion, repetitive motion, noise, dust and chemicals that caused health impairment, lost of energy and decreased productivity. Preliminary study was done at woodworking workshop Civil Engineering Department Bali State Polytechnic, with thirteen students as subjects. Result showed that the work station was not fit to body size of students and caused awkward postured. The students exposed to noise, wooden dust, vibration and chemicals without proper personal protecting devises. Soon after stop working, student got some musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) for neck, hands, shoulders, back, low back, feet and knee. Student also got weakened activation and motivation. To improve the work condition, ergonomics intervention was conducted through experimental research with pre test-post test control group design. Subjects were 4 groups (10 students in each group) with four treatments. Group 1 was performed the task with the original work condition (control group); group 2 with new work organization; group 3 with new work station; and group 4 with combined new work organization and station. The goal of the research is to assess the effect of ergonomics intervention of work organization and station to the decreasing of health impairment, saving energy and increasing of productivity. The health impairment indicated through working hearth rate, musculoskeletal disorder and psychological fatigue, while the productivity calculated through the proportion between the amount of the product as an output and the health impairment as input. Result showed that ergonomics intervention on both organization and work station has the best effect on the health impairment, saving energy and productivity. The working hearth rate decreased from 113.21 to 92.91 beat/minute (17.93%). The score of MSDs decreased from 42.57 to 33.22 (21.96%) and the score of psychological fatigue decreased from 47.48 to 36.82 (22.46%). The usage of energy decreased from 9.51 KWH to 3.93 KWH (58.68%), while the productivity increased from 0.0000045 to 0.0000110 (143.05%). This research has proved that ergonomics intervention protecting students from woodworking hazards and finally students can perform the task in healthy, safety, convenient, efficient and productive work condition.
