Investigation on Utilization of Hearing Protection Devices in An Aircraft Maintenance Company

Objective: In order to find out the problems in the utilization of the hearing protection devices (HPDs) and increase the utilization rate and efficiency of HPDs in occupational noise exposure workers in China. Methods: Questionnaire investigations were conducted in an aircraft maintenance company where workers were frequently exposed to noise damage. Results: The result shows that only two types of HPDs including earmuff and earplug were used; the HPDs utilization rate in this company was 95%; however, many workers did not know the related knowledge about HPDs, and moreover, only 11% of workers wore HPDs during the whole period of work; the wearing length of HPDs depends heavily on HPDs' comfort. Inclusions: This investigation indicates that the comfort of HPDs must be strengthened in their production process. In addition, to reduce the hearing damage in occupational noise-exposed environment, it is necessary for the government, enterprises and workers to work together.
