Integrating Human Capabilities into Biosurveillance Systems: A Study of Biosurveillance and Situation Awareness

Timely and accurate detection of potential disease outbreaks is critically dependent upon the situation awareness (SA) of health professionals. They need to be able to identify an outbreak quickly and accurately to prevent the disease from spreading. Biosurveillance systems that focus on supporting their SA may help improve health professionals' detection and decision-making performance. However, to optimize the utility of such systems, several challenges must first be overcome. In this paper, we present SA-oriented solutions that can help address the challenges facing current biosurveillance systems. Our approach will be discussed within the context of a theoretical model of SA, citing the value of conducting SA requirement analyses and designing SA-oriented systems.
