In the Fall of 1993, Motorola Energy Systems Group (ESG), initiated a program for the development of technology on Li-polymer atteries. The target was to manufacture cells that exceeded 300 cycles at C rate, offered excellent rate capability and exhibited 150 Wh/kg and 300 wh/l gravimetric and volumetric energy densities. A multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers was formed and chartered to develop the three main elements of the technology: the electrode materials, the electrolyte system and the manufacturing process.
