NEC has newly developed a portable satellite phone for Inmarsat mini-M system whose size is A4, weight is 2.6 kg including the built-in battery. This portable phone can operate almost all over the world via Inmarsat 3rd-generation satellites, the system of which will go into global operation in 1997. This portable satelite phone is the second generation of NEC's Inmarsat portable terminal after the Inmarsat-M mobile earth station which was develpoed 4 years ago. The size becomes approx. 1/8 and the weight becomes 1/4. The antenna, RF sub-system and modulator/demodulator are the key modules whose design influences to the phone size, weight and operation. In order to achieve the acceptable size and weight, the optimization of each module is necessary. The feature and design overviews of the portable satellite phone are described in this paper.
