ICE PERFORMANCE OF THE SWEDISH MULTI-PURPOSE ICEBREAKER TOR VIKING II

The multi-purpose icebreaker Tor Viking n was delivered to B&N Viking Icebreaking and Offshore AS in winter 2000. The vessel is to operate in the North Sea as an AHTS vessel during the Baltic open water season and as an icebreaker in Swedish waters in winter - if the severity of the winter requires. The dual purpose deployment results in stringent design requirements stemming from operation in open water and from ice capability. A full scale ice testing series was conducted in the northernmost Baltic. It included level ice and old channel performance, manoeuvring performance tested by turning circles and operational tests together with a number of ridge penetration tests. Also on-ice measurements of ice properties and thicknesses were done. The design and operational characteristics of the vessel is described in this paper. The results from full scale tests are reported. Emphasis is on analysing the capability of the vessel in relation to the size and power of the vessel. The performance of Tor Viking is also compared with other new icebreakers. Also the performance of the vessel is analysed in view of the model test results.
