Songsu Bridge, Widening of an Existing Truss Bridge

Songsu bridge was originally constructed in the 1970;s. The fatal collapse of a suspended span inrn1994 was attributed primarily to construction defects, the extent of which resulted in the completernreconstruction of the superstructure to a modified design. The strategic importance of the SongsurnBridge as a highway crossing of the River Han necessitated immediate reconstruction. Wideningrncommenced in 1999 within a design and construct Contract awarded to Hyundai, with High-PointrnRendel and Chun-Il acting as consulting engineers. Widening is achieved by the addition of newrnparallel trusses outside of the existing bridge supporting a widened orthotropic steel deck platernmade continuous with the existing deck plate. Pre-loading of the new trusses to relieve load in thernexisting trusses results in a complex construction sequence.
