This paper presents results of serviceability study and vibration control techniques being employed for the air traffic control tower at the new Inchon International Airport (IIA) on Yongjong Island, Korea. New serviceability criteria for the air traffic control tower at IIA were proposed considering normal perception level of air traffic controllers. Dynamic simulation, including wind-tunnel tests, showed that passive damping devices were not sufficient and it was necessary to make use of active damping systems. In active control, H_∞ control method with bilinear transform and linear quadratic regulator were examined. Numerical simulations show that the optimally designed Hybrid Mass Damper (HMD) system is expected to reduce the wind-induced vibration effectively and satisfy the serviceability criteria as well as design constraints. Free vibration test of the tower after the installation of HMD system is being prepared for performance evaluation.
