Railway Tunnels Excavated by TBM and Deep Bore Blasting Method in Japan

The Ministry of Construction is currently proceeding with the Yamba Dam project in Agatsuma-gun, Gunma Prefecture, located about 100km north of Tokyo. The project will result in the partial inundation of the Agatsuma Line (single track, JR Eastern Japan) and will necessitate the replacement of about 10km of track. Three tunnels are planned for about 8km of this relocated track, specifically from the starting point, the Yamba tunnel, the Kawarayu tunnel and the Yokokabe tunnel. The decision was made for various reasons, such as the natural ground conditions, environment of the surroundings and economical viability, to carry out the construction work of the Yamba and Kawarayu tunnels.
