Ortho boric acid has been known to react with poly hydroxy aliphatic compounds such as glycerine, mannitol and pentaerythritol to form poly-esters with the elimination of water since at least 1842 (ref. 1, page 15, Kemp ref. 53). Aqueous solutions of the polyesters so formed are observed to be approx 4 orders of magnitude more acidic than aqueous solutions containing the same molar quantity of unesterified boric acid (ref. 1, page 15, Kemp ref. 54).
