Recent advances in computer networking and the accelerated growth of information retrieval mechanisms have brought about a phenomenal leap in library resource sharing. A new information technology paradigm has emerged based upon the convergence in technologies related to computers, communication and content in traditional as welll as electronic forms of publishing. Digitisation is one of the key issues and the world is moving towards a digital environment. In this context, developmetn of digital libraries and establishing access to these through Virtual Libraries over networks assume significant importance. The digital library system offers maximum flexibility, durability, immunity, stability, capacity, accessibility and compatibility with othe media with minimum cost, space and maintenance.
