This paper describes a structured approach to optimising the base control configuration on an ethylene cracking furnace so that the furnace coil outlet temperature is tightly controlled and the furnace is able to reject disturbances in load and fuel gas specific gravity. The paper focuses on a Linde Pyrocrack furnace BA-103 at the Shell and DEA Oil refinery in Heide, Germany, where the basic controls and physical configuration were modified to give improved stability. The approach of the project team was to carry out a detailed pre-test, as would be performed as part of a conventional DMCplus multivariable control project. The paper illustrates the benefits of taking this structured approach to problem identification and resolution.
