There are important on-going activities to develop modernizedrnGlobal Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). ThernGPS Joint Program Office is currently conducting an ArchitecturalrnTrade Study to develop requirements and systemrnarchitectures for the next generation of GPS, a.k.a.rnGPS-III. The European Union (EU) and European SpacernAgency (ESA) are developing the Galileo system. Thernneeds of civil GPS applications, especially those withrnsafety of life concerns like aviation, are driving many ofrnthe architectural innovations being considered for GPSrnand Galileo. There are number of key underlying assumptionsrnbeing made by the civil community in its usernof GPS for high integrity applications and in the deploymentrnof augmentations that may not be widely recognized.rnMany of these GPS applications will be in servicernlong before modernized GNSS are deployed and mayrncontinue to exist after deployment of these systems. FuturernGNSS architectures (and near-term GPS modernizationrnwith Blocks IIR-M and IIF) need to consider theserncivil assumptions to preserve the investments being madernfor augmentation systems and GPS equipment.
