STUDY OF ZrN COATED TITANIUM ALLOYBY MULTI-ARC ION PLATING METHOD

A ZrN coating was deposited on TC11 titanium alloy substrate by a multi-arc ion platingrn(AIP) technique. The coating was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) for crystal structurernidentification, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) for chemical composition analysis,rnscanning electron microscopy (SEM) for cross-sectional microstructure, scratch test for adhesionrnmeasurement, and salt mist test for corrosion evaluation. Erosion resistance of the ZrN coating was alsornevaluated through solid-particle erosion testing. The film thickness was approximately 3 μm. It hasrnbeen found that the ZrN coating is mainly composed of (111) preferred orientation of ZrN phase.rnCritical load between coating and substrate was about 40 N, the ZrN coating had a fairly goodrnadherence with the substrate. The ZrN coating does not affect the corrosion performance of TC11rntitanium alloy. The ZrN coating was prone to reach stead-state conditions. The erodent rates of TC11rnand the ZrN coating were 45.7 mg/kg and 2.1 mg/kg, respectively, and the ZrN coating demonstrates arnnotable improvement in erosion resistance performance.
